It makes us all feel so stable and fine and intelligent! I think people watch traditional shows for "vicarious thrills", but I think reality TV is just about a superiority thing. There may be a vicarious thrill watching one of the bigger budget reality shows, like American Idol, but I don't think that is the norm. Of course the money issue that drives it all is that most of them are just cheaper to produce than regular TV. You're right about controversy, it's constantly in the media, and people never stop to think how much of it is really just all made up. I think it's about 90% fictitious.
