Welcome to 9honey Celebrity’s live blog for the 81st annual Golden Globe Awards, which is gearing up to be a night of good old fashioned Hollywood glitz and glamour – and stiff competition amongst nominees.
Of course, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie‘s blockbuster Barbie is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, but it won’t be competing with the other half of ‘Barbenheimer’ – Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer – as that’s in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category.
Read on to see the biggest moments, winners and surprises as they happen.
1.40pm AEST – Another loss for Barbie
Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy has officially been given to Emma Stone for Poor Things over Margot Robbie for Barbie.
“This means the world to me,” Stone said in her acceptance speech.
Barbie notably was the most nominated film of the night, with Oppenheimer trailing closely behind.
Following Stone’s win, Oppenheimer‘s Cillian Murphy won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.
Moments later, however, Barbie saw victory with Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas winning Best Original Song – Motion Picture for What Was I Made For?
1.30pm AEST – Christopher Nolan’s tribute to Heath Ledger after Best Director win
Oppenheimer has had its first victory in the ‘Barbenheimer’ battle, with Christopher Nolan taking out Best Director over Barbie‘s Greta Gerwig.
In his acceptance speech, Nolan mentioned late Aussie actor Heath Ledger as he reflected on his career, noting how the last time he accepted a Golden Globe was on behalf of Ledger (for The Dark Knight) following his shock death in 2009.
“The only time I’ve ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend Heath Ledger, and that was complicated and challenging for me,” Nolan said.
“In the middle of speaking, I glanced up, Robert Downey Jr. caught my eye, gave me a look of love and support that he’s giving me now, the same love and support he’s shown so many people in our community over so many years.”
Nolan then said he could only accept the award on behalf of the Oppenheimer team.

1pm AEST – Ali Wong’s congratulatory kiss from Bill Hader
Beef star Ali Wong took out the gong for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, but before she made her way up to the stage to accept her award, she took a moment to hug and kiss her boyfriend Bill Hader.
It’s a notable public display of affection for the notoriously private couple, who are rarely seen out and about together, let alone looking romantic while doing it.
The couple have been together since April 2023, following Wong’s separation from husband Justin Hakuta, whom she thanked in her speech.
“I really need to thank the father of my children and my best friend, Justin, for all of your love and support. It’s because of you that I’m able to be a working mother,” Wong said.
12.40pm AEST – Australia’s Elizabeth Debicki wins Best Supporting Actress – Television Series
A victory for Australia came in the form of Elizabeth Debicki’s Best Supporting Actress – Television Series win, for her performance as Princess Diana in The Crown.
“This is just astonishing to me,” Debicki said in her acceptance speech, before she thanked her on-screen children and her late godmother.
She also thanked her partner, Christian, who she said didn’t want to be thanked as he didn’t want to be shown on television.
12.35pm AEST – Sarah Snook reveals sex of baby on red carpet
Speaking of Aussie stars, Sarah Snook slyly revealed the sex of her newborn baby while on the red carpet.
“I love it. She’s the best,” Snook said about motherhood, per People.
“She’s standing. Not walking yet, but she’s standing supported. She’s great. I love her.”
Snook, 35, welcomed her baby daughter in 2023, a fact she revealed with a social media post shared in May.
12.30pm AEST – Taylor Swift unimpressed by Jo Koy’s joke about her relationship with Travis Kelce
Taylor Swift is in the house… and she doesn’t appear to be happy about host Jo Koy’s joke regarding her relationship with NFL star Travis Kelce.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” Koy said.
When the camera panned to Swift, she looked down with a frown and took a sip of her drink.
12pm AEST – Golden Globes host Jo Koy’s cheeky message to audience in opening monologue
Comedian Jo Koy’s opening monologue raised more than a few eyebrows, with some jokes not exactly landing smoothly… prompting Koy to yell at the audience: “Shut up! I got this gig 10 days ago!”
He joked he had not actually watched many of the nominated shows until he landed the hosting job, and that he didn’t write all of his jokes.
Koy mentioned Meryl Streep several times in his 10-minute monologue, and poked fun at Robert De Niro welcoming a new baby at the age of 80.
The size of Barry Keoghan’s penis (as seen in Saltburn) was also mentioned in conjunction with a joke about the Barbie cast’s lack of genitalia on-screen, and Koy also joked about how he felt “weird” about being attracted to a doll… also known as Ryan Gosling‘s Ken.
“It was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll,” Koy said after joking Barbie was about a “big-boobed doll”.
Director Greta Gerwig and castmembers Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie looked less than impressed.
“I wrote some of these and those are the ones you’re laughing at,” Koy jokingly said, distancing himself from the bits that didn’t land.
11.30am AEST – Look closely at Gillian Anderson’s dress…
Do you see what we see?
Sex Education star Gillian Anderson made a subtle statement with her ivory strapless Gabriela Hearst gown, explaining it’s embroidered with vulvas.
“[I wore it] for so many reasons,” Anderson, 55, told Deadline on the red carpet, noting “it’s brand appropriate”.
Inside the event, she told People it was also inspired by flowers, noting the embroidery design is also of peonies.

She is presenting at the ceremony alongside her Ghosts co-star Utkarsh Ambudkar.
10.15am AEST – All the Aussie stars up for Golden Globes
It’s going to be a big night for Australia, with the country’s unofficial ambassador Margot Robbie being nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Barbie, and the film itself being nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Sarah Snook is also up for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama gong for her performance in Succession, which is the most nominated television show at this year’s ceremony.
And Elizabeth Debicki is up for Best Supporting Actress – Television, for her performance as Princess Diana in The Crown.
In an unlikely rivalry, Australia’s own Margot Robbie is battling out category newcomer Taylor Swift for the cinematic and box office achievement award, which could see the pop star nab her very first Golden Globe for her Eras Tour Movie.
Robbie, meanwhile, is nominated for her film Barbie.
It’s one of the most unusual battles in Golden Globes history, so says US entertainment journalist Sam Rubin. He told TODAY: “The big battle might be between Margot Robbie and Taylor Swift for this category of cinematic achievement.
“You have Barbie up against Taylor Swift’s movie. I do think Margot Robbie walks away with at least one Golden Globe tonight. Maybe more.”
9am AEST – Why Elvis Presley fans are remembering the 2023 Golden Globes today
The 2023 Golden Globe Awards was an emotional night for the family of Elvis Presley, with Austin Butler taking home Best Actor, Motion Picture Drama for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis – and his acceptance speech had the late icon’s ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, and daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, in tears.
Unbeknownst to all at the time, the event would be the final public appearance Lisa Marie would ever make.
She died aged 54 just days later.
8am AEST – Do the Golden Globes winners predict the Oscars?
Every year, although there are a few awards ceremonies preceding it (see: Palm Springs International Film Awards and Creative Arts Emmy Awards), the Golden Globes officially kick off awards season – and the event is usually billed as one that can predict the outcome of the Oscars in March.
But that theory isn’t always one that comes true – last year, Everything Everywhere All At Once won Best Picture at the Oscars, and at the earlier Golden Globes, The Fabelmans was named best movie drama, with The Banshees of Inisherin taking out best comedy or musical movie.
One reason for this could be that the voting body for the Golden Globes – formerly the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, now comprised of 300 journalists from around the world – isn’t as big as the voting pool of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

It also has two best picture categories – one for drama, and one for comedy or musical – whereas the Oscars only has one.
