Grammys 2024: Date, Australia times, performances including Joni Mitchell, new categories and everything we know about the 2024 Grammy Awards, explained


It’s that time of year again, when music’s biggest and brightest battle it out for that shiny gramophone-shaped trophy.

This year’s Grammys ceremony will feature performances from the world’s biggest artists, including, SZA, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, and even Joni Mitchell, who will be making her debut on the Grammys stage at age 80.

When and where are the Grammys being held in 2024?

The 66th Grammy Awards Ceremony will be held on January 4 (January 5 in Australian time) at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Streamed live at 8:00-11:30pm ET and 5:00-8:30 pm PT on CBS in America, the Grammys ceremony, will be available to view in Australia on television at 12pm on Monday January 5.

Who are the celebrities performing at and hosting the Grammys in 2024?

This year’s ceremony will be star-studded, with music appealing to fans of all genres and all generations.

So far, those who have been announced as performers at the awards ceremony include Billie Eilish, Billy Joel, Burna Boy, Dua Lipa, Luke Combs, Olivia Rodrigo, Joni Mitchell and Travis Scott.

U2 will also be putting on a first-of-its-kind broadcast performance from technological venue Sphere in LA, which will also feature a special awards presentation.

Celebs we will be seeing presenting an award to their fellow artists so far include Christina Aguilera, Samara Joy, Lenny Kravitz, Maluma, Lionel Richie, Mark Ronson, Meryl Streep, Taylor Tomlinson and Oprah Winfrey.

The host of the 66th Grammy Awards will be comedian Trevor Noah, who has been the MC of choice for the last four years.

Notable Grammy nominees for 2024

This year’s Grammy nominations were absolutely dominated by women, beginning with SZA taking out nine nominations across multiple genres, including best traditional R&B performance for Love Language, best R&B song for Snooze, best melodic rap performance for Low, and best pop duo/group performance for Ghost in the Machine, for which she collaborated with singer Phoebe Bridgers.

Bridgers earned the second highest amount of nominations, with seven nods in total, six of them being with her band boygenius.

Joni Mitchell was nominated in the Best Folk Album Category for her 2023 live album, Joni Mitchell At Newport [Live], which was a recording of her surprise performance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival, which marked her first performance in 20 years.

Barbie earned 11 nominations across the board, including Record Of The Year for What Was I Made For?, which was also nominated for Song of the Year along with Dance the Night, Barbie World for Best Rap Song, and more.

Aussies in particular are killing it this year, with some of Australian pop’s biggest names receiving nominations for Best Pop Dance Recording award – Kylie Minogue for Padam Padam and Troye Sivan for Rush.

Melbourne artist Dom Dolla is also nominated in the Best Remixed Recording category for his song, New Gold, featuring fellow Aussie artist Tame Impala.

Many big names earned six nominations apiece, including Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Brandy Clark, Jon Batiste, producer Jack Antonoff, and his best friend Taylor Swift.

But the star will be missing the presence of her boyfriend Travis Kelce, as he prepares for his own career-defining moment.

The NFL player has pre-emptively explained that he will be unable to accompany Swift to the awards on her big night as he must travel to and prepare for the upcoming SuperBowl championship, where his team, the Kansas City Chiefs will be going up against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday February 11, just one week after the Grammys are held.

“I wish I could go support Taylor at the Grammys, and watch her win every single award that she’s nominated for,” he said in an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show

“But I think I’ve got practice on Sunday,” he said, adding, “Unfortunately, I’ve gotta get ready for this big old Super Bowl that we’ve got in a week.”

New Grammy Awards Categories for 2024

The Grammy awards have a whopping 94 categories this year, but there are three brand new additions: Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording – for which Aussies Kylie Minogue and Troye Sivan have been nominated.
